Local History

The Historic New Orleans Collection
     A museum with permanent and changing exhibits of Louisiana and New Orleans history, plus tours of a historic private residence in the French Quarter.

Louisiana State Museum
     Operates the Cabildo, Presbytere, 1850 House, Old U.S. Mint, and Madame John's Legacy in the French Quarter. The website contains over a dozen online history exhibits.

Musée Conti Wax Museum
     Experience more than 300 years of history, legend and scandal with 154 life-size figures displayed in historically accurate settings.

Hermann-Grima and Gallier Historic Houses
     An accurate depiction the lifestyle of prosperous Creole families between 1830 to 1860. (Restoration based on archaeological studies, building contract, and inventories.)

Westwego Historical Museum
     Features a 12-foot mounted alligator and an old-time hardware store with many of its original contents.

Military History

Confederate Civil War Museum
     The second largest collection of Confederate memorabilia in the world.

National D-Day Museum
     A museum of the American experiene during World War II years.

The Jackson Barracks Military Museum
     An unparalleled collection of weaponry, artifacts, and memorabilia from all major US wars, plus lifelike figures that recreate the military experience.

Chalmette Battlefield
     Tour the site of the Battle of New Orleans, the decisive American victory over the British at the end of the War of 1812. Exhibits and an audiovisual program explain the importance of Louisiana and the Battle of New Orleans.

Fort Pike State Historic Site
     Fort Pike defended the passage between Lake Pontchartrain and the Gulf of Mexico until 1890. Visit the Citadel Museum, or stroll through arched casemates and stand overlooking the Rigolets as sentries once did.

Other History Museums

New Orleans Pharmacy Museum
     Housed in a 19th-century apothecary shop, the museum includes a medicinal herb garden in the courtyard, plus exhibits on the history of pharmacy, medicine and healthcare.

The New Orleans African-American Museum
     Located in Tremé, America's oldest urban African-American neighborhood.

The Ursuline Museum
     Contains original documents from Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Louis XV to the Ursuline Sisters, art work given to the Sisters by Louis XV, and religious artifacts dating from the Spanish Colonial period to the present.

American Italian Renaissance Foundation Museum
     The history and contributions of Italian Americans in the Southeast, told through photographs, articles, family histories, and memorabilia.

New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum
      Believed to be the only museum in the world dedicated to the Voodoo religion. View artifacts of the Voodoo queen Marie Laveau, hear tales of famous Voodoo practitioners, or even have a Gris-Gris bag prepared for you.

Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum
     An education and research center where artifacts of maritime history are interpreted and preserved.

Mardi Gras

The Germaine Cazenave Wells Mardi Gras Museum
     A rare glimpse of the private side of Mardi Gras, including Carnival court gowns, costumes, and other memorabilia.

Mardi Gras World
     Tour workshops where spectacular Mardi Gras floats and other props are made.

Mardi Gras Museum
     Videos and memorabilia explaining the traditions of Mardi Gras.

Art

New Orleans Museum of Art
     The permanent collection of more than 40,000 objects is particularly rich in French and American art, photography, glass, and African and Japanese art.

The Ogden Museum of Southern Art
     The largest and most comprehensive collection of Southern art in the world.

Degas House
     Experience Edward Degas through his own eyes by taking a tour of his family home and studio.

Louisiana Wildlife Museum
     Over 700 species native to Louisiana presented in colorful exhibits, dioramas, and an aquarium.

The Louisiana Children's Museum
     More than 100 hands-on exhibits – pilot a towboat down the mighty Mississippi, lift 500 pounds, or stand inside a gigantic bubble.

Saints Hall of Fame
     For fans of New Orleans football.

The UCM Museum
     Housed in a vintage service station, a 90-year-old Creole cottage, an exhibition hall, and the much-photographed House of Shards, the eccentric “You-See-Em” Museum features thousands of found objects, homemade inventions, odd collections, memorabilia, and old arcade machines that are a lot of fun to play.
